Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The aim of this course is to provide the necessary tools for the structure elucidation of organometallic and inorganic compounds. At the end of the course the student should have an understanding of solution Multinuclear NMR Spectroscopy and Emission Spectroscopy.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the principles of spectroscopy and symmetry of the molecules.

A. Fundamentals of spectroscopy. Energy levels, transitions, sensitivity issues, timescales.

B. Vibrational spectroscopy: Basics, Symmetry, IR spectroscopy and applications with organometallic compounds.

C. Resonance spectroscopy: Basics of relaxation and the vector model. The instrument. Chemical shielding and shifts; spin-spin coupling;

D. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy: the instrument, selection rules, UV-vis spectroscopy of metal complexes

E. Emission spectroscopy: basics, time resolved experiments, application to the main classes of transition metal luminescent complexes.

F- Mass spectrometry: main methods

G. Case studies
